When you visit the dentist on a regular basis, you will be subject to a dental x-ray every couple of visits. The x-rays are used to allow the dentist to look at your teeth and diagnose any oral problems based on the images. Whether you have wondered about such x-rays or want to be prepared for a visit, the information below will help you understand the dental x-ray process a little bit better.
Description of Dental X-Rays
A dental x-ray is a 2D image that will show the bones of the mouth as well as tooth anatomy below the surface of the gums. Dentists work with two x-ray types, digital and film development. Since the digital method uses less radiation is quickly taking over film in popularity. Digital x-rays actually use 80% less radiation than film and are quicker to complete and save. Regent Dental Centre now uses only digital imaging.
There are two types of digital x-rays, intraoral and extraoral. With intraoral, the x-ray will show the fine details of the mouth and will be taking from inside the mouth. Extraoral will be an x-ray of the teeth from outside the mouth, usually around the jaw.
How Often Are X-Rays Needed?
In most dental cases, you will only be x-rayed once a year unless an issue arises in the in-between time. As we age, the teeth can shift, and problems can occur with the overall oral health. It is best to have new x-rays completed at least once a year to be able to compare records and see if any issues have developed. If so, the dentist can then provide the appropriate treatment to ensure your mouth stays in perfect health.
Regent Dental uses digital imaging and recommends x-rays to ensure quality mouth health. With the proper records, your teeth can be treated the right way, ensuring a beautiful smile!
