How Many Teeth Does the Average Person Have?

We all use our teeth for eating, but have you ever considered how many teeth you have and use each day? Most people don’t even consider how many teeth they have until they begin to lose them. The number of teeth you have can depend on a variety of facts. To start, your age is a likely influence as to the number of teeth you have. Children have a different number of teeth than adults, which is due to the difference in baby teeth and adult teeth.

Other factors can include your ability to access dental care growing up, how well you’ve maintained your teeth and gum health, and how many tooth extractions you may have had.

How Many Baby Teeth Will My Child Have?

When teeth begin to grow and push through the gum line they are known as baby teeth. Eventually, the baby teeth will be replaced with permanent teeth. Typical development of baby teeth begins at around six months of age. The medical term for baby teeth are deciduous teeth.

For most children, the development of their baby teeth happens from 6 months all the way up to 3 years old. At three, most infants will have their full set of baby teeth. There will be ten top teeth and ten bottom teeth. The baby teeth will then begin to fall out naturally when the child is 5 to 6 years old.

Importance of Caring for Baby Teeth

Baby teeth need to be cared for as much as permanent teeth, even though they will eventually fall out. Helping your child to develop early brushing and flossing habits will encourage them to care for their adult teeth.

How Many Adult Teeth Do I Have?

Most adults will have 32 teeth. The number of teeth will include 12 molars as well as 8 premolars, 4 canines, and 8 incisors. Usually, all permanent teeth have come in by the teenage years, although the 4 back molars can sometimes develop as late as an individual’s early twenties. Many adults have their wisdom teeth removed.
