What are dentures?
Dentures are false teeth, which are designed to replace your natural teeth after tooth loss.
They differ from individual dental implants in that they are placed over the top of existing teeth and gums and can be easily removed.
Are there different types of dentures?
There are four primary types of dentures. Depending on your own individual needs, will determine which denture type our dentists will recommend.
Partial dentures
Partial dentures have one or more false teeth and use a metal and plastic framework that attaches to your teeth and fills in the gaps where your missing teeth used to be.
Full dentures
Full dentures are intended to replace your upper, lower, or both arches of teeth if you have lost most of your natural teeth. They fit directly onto your gums using friction. It can take up to four appointments to have a full set of dentures made and fit to your mouth.
Implant-supported dentures
Implant-supported dentures are like full dentures and are meant to replace all of your teeth. Instead of fitting onto your gums, they attach to a series of 4-6 dental implants. They are most commonly used in the bottom jaw because a full denture is often less stable there.
Immediate dentures
With immediate dentures, there is no delay to get your new set of teeth – you enter the office with your natural teeth and leave your appointment with a new set of false teeth. Immediate dentures are made prior to your natural teeth being removed. Once your dentist as extracted the natural teeth that are being removed the denture is placed over top of them. This helps to protect the open sockets where your natural teeth once were and can help to reduce the swelling from the procedure.
How do dentures stay in place?
Partial dentures usually clip onto your remaining healthy teeth using metal or plastic clips.
Full dentures stay in place with friction, since they fit tightly over your gums. Denture adhesive can be used for a more secure hold.
What are dentures made of?
Today’s dentures are mostly made of strong acrylic (plastic) resin and metal. However, some more high-end dentures use porcelain (ceramic) teeth that look and feel more like your natural teeth.
How do I clean dentures?
You’ll need to brush your dentures at least once per day with a denture cleaner. You should also remove and rinse them after you eat. At night, you should put your dentures in a denture-soaking solution to clean and sanitize them and keep them moist.
Can I sleep with my dentures in?
We recommended you do not sleep with your dentures in. Taking your dentures out at night lets your mouth recover from wearing them during the day. Wearing them 24 hours a day can cause issues like irritation due to dentures rubbing on your gums, and also lead to poor overall oral hygiene. It also presents a hazard to you and your dentures if you clench your jaw or grind your teeth while sleeping.
