10 Ways to Prepare for Your Dental Checkup

Going to the dentist means that you get to enjoy a thorough cleaning of your teeth. It leaves your mouth feeling fresh and your teeth and gums healthier. If you are going in for a dental checkup soon, you want to go in with as clean of a mouth as possible. Follow these steps to ensure your dental checkup goes as smoothly as possible.

Preparing for Your Next Dental Checkup

1 – Verify Your Appointment First. The last thing you want to do is go in two hours early, or be late to your appointment because you remembered the time wrong. Call the day before and verify your appointment time, if they don’t call you first.
2 – Make Sure Your Dentist Has All Your Info. If you recently started seeing a new dentist, you want to make sure your dentist has all of your dental history available to them. Transfer any records to your new dentist prior to your checkup. That way, they can see your history and know what to expect.
3 – Bring Your Insurance and Payment Information. You know that either your insurance is going to get the bill, or you are going to have to pay for services, so make sure you bring this information to the visit with you.
4 – Write Out Your Medications and Doses. Your dentist needs to know what medications you are taking, and their specifics. You should write down the name of the medication, the dosage, and how often you are supposed to take the medicine.
5 – Show Up a Little Early. In case you haven’t been there in a while, or if you are going to a new office, you may have some paperwork. Show up early enough to be able to get that done without rushing.
6 – Clean Your Mouth Thoroughly. You want to go in to see your dentist with a fresh, clean mouth. Brush your teeth well, and then floss before you head in. That way, the dentist can see the condition of your mouth after you take care of it each day.
7 – Make a List of Questions or Concerns. If you are going to see your dentist in a few weeks, write down any questions or concerns you want to bring up with the dentist. That way, while you are there, you can discuss anything going on in your mouth.
8 – Avoid Caffeine Prior to Your Appointment. Being jittery in the dentist’s chair is not good for you, or easy for the dentist. Make sure you do what you can to avoid having any caffeine just prior to being seen.
9 – If You Are Anxious, Say So. Your dentist can do a lot to help if you suffer from dental anxiety, but they need to know about it. If you are a bit nervous, tell them. They can help.
10 – Be Honest with Your Dentist. This one can be tough at times, but it is necessary. No matter what the truth is, make sure you tell your dentist the truth about your mouth. Pain, hygiene, and concerns all need to be conveyed to your dentist so they can give you the best checkup possible.
